PROUD TO BE "BENGALI"

ABOUT WEST BENGAL....MY BIRTH PLACE

The land of fertile soil steeped in culture and tradition drew most of them into Bengal's heart. Bengal's mysticism coupled with its intoxicating charm; Bengal's throbbing heart and its pulsating life has a unique flavor.
In West Bengal most of the people speak Bengali and they are very proud of their language.Culture to the Bengali community is as valuable as air and water to living beings. What Bengal thinks today, India thinks tomorrow. With the possible exception of the southern part of India, no other region can claim such a rich heritage or flourishing contemporary culture as Bengal.
Tagore’s international recognition brought a renaissance in the culture of Bengal and Bengalis could proudly hold their heads up high. Bengali culture had established itself as the world’s greatest culture. Bengalis have a high regard for scholarship and learning. Calcutta University, with 200,000 students, is the world’s largest degree factory and an explosive center of learning. It is from the countryside of eastern India that Bengali culture draws its inspiration.

ABOUT BENGALI'S MARRIAGE....JUST WOW!!!!!!!

Its a great pleasure to be present in a Bengali "biye-baari"(wedding), which takes place in an extremely traditional way. The marriage normally does not take place between close blood relatives and persons having the same gotras. Also there are few months when the Bengalis don't have their wedding. That is between middle of December to middle of January (Poush), middle of March to middle of April (Chaitra) and middle of August to middle of September(Bhaadra).
The marriage is conducted only in the evening, in the presence of a priest, at the house of normally the bride. On the wedding day,the ceremonies, ‘Dodhi Mangal’ and ‘Gaaye halud’ (turmeric bath) will be held in both the houses on the wedding day, very early in the morning, before sunrise. The place where the wedding takes place is fully decorated with attractive patterns(alpona) made out of rice paste with water.
Small banana trees are placed at the entrance of the house. Under the tree, a mangal ghot (usually a small, copper pitcher-shaped vessel) is placed. In the ghot, a mango stem with five leaves (amra pallab) is placed in water. This tree and the ghot are kept for ten days after the wedding. On the side of the ghot, a Sri (star sign) symbol is drawn with sindoor mixed in oil. The door of the entrance is decorated with a string of mango leaves, which stays for a period of one year after marriage.

NOW COMES FOOD...JUST YUMMYYYYY......

Bengali cuisine takes in the five basic tastes of astringent, bitter, sweet, sour and hot. Bengalis are, on the whole, an infectiously passionate lot and few things unite them more than their common passion for food—especially for fish. No meal is considered complete without it. Symbols of fertility, fish are touched by husbands and then sent to their brides before the wedding ceremony. No Bengali meal is complete without sweets. From the ubiquitous mishti doi and rossogolla, to the more rare pithey and pulli, the choice here too is unlimited.
In fact, Bengalis have, with justification, such high regard for their food that it is usually heard that there are only four great cuisines in the world—French, Chinese, Italian and Bengali!! Even though Bengalis are famed for their fish fixation, the array of vegetarian items that form part of their cuisine is amazing.
It is said that nothing goes to waste in a Bengali kitchen. The leaves of the banana plant are used for serving, the stems (thor) are cooked as ghonto or chhechhki, the blossoms (mocha) are also consumes as ghonto and paturi (a way of cooking food wrapped in banana leaves). The fruit is available both in the ripe and raw form, the latter being considered ideal for koftas. And what do you know, even the peel is crushed and ground to a paste and fried for a delicious starter!
Whether you have five dishes or sixty, the most important part of eating in Bengal is eating each dish seperately with a little bit of rice in order to savour its individual bouquet. The more delicate tastes always come first and it is only by graduating from these to stronger ones that you can accommodate the whole range of taste.
Vegetables, especially the bitter ones, are the first item followed by dal, perhaps accompanied by fries or fritters of fish and vegetables. After this comes any of the complex vegetable dishes like ghanto or chachchari, followed by the important fish jhol as well as other fish preparations. Meat will always follow fish, and chutneys and ambals will provide the refeshing touch of tartness to make the tongue anticipate the sweet dishes.
Whether having an elaborate meal at home, or tucking in at a restaurant, Bengali cuisine has much to offer. Small wonder then that it is that said Bengalis live to eat. Some of the most popular recipes are Matha Diye Moonger Dal, Narkel Shorsher Chingri, Doi Maachh, Potoler Dolma, Labra, Shukto, Ghugni, Cholar-daal, Oal kochu bata, Chingri maachher malai kari, Dhokar dalna, Alu posto, Bhapa Ilish, Deemer-dalna, and among the sweetmeats, Patishapta, Chaaler Payesh, Rosogulla and Bhappa Doi, to name a few.

Is Only Child is a lonely Child?????????

Traditionally, so-called only children have gotten a bad name. Not many years ago it was common for people to assume that an only child was sure to be hopelessly selfish and spoiled. Experts added to the list of only-child woes, claiming that they were apt to be more aggressive, uncooperative, socially inept, less successful in marriage, and so on.
But none of this is necessarily true. Only children often grow up to be happy and well adjusted. In fact, being an only child has some advantages: They spend a lot of time interacting with adults, so they develop strong language skills, which serve them well in school and later in life. They enjoy their parents' undivided attention, and never have to suffer the pain of sibling jealousy. And they often enjoy educational, cultural, and travel opportunities that children from large families might miss out on.
But I do think that only children face some real challenges:

Every child is special, but some are too special. Being too special means that a child grows up feeling that she is the only person that matters in the family, and by extension, in the world as a whole. Parents naturally focus a tremendous amount of love and energy on their children, and when there is only one child, the focus can be very intense indeed. Sometimes, too, the events that led up to the child being an "only"--perhaps a long period of infertility, followed by a miraculous pregnancy--also contribute to the parents' conviction that this child must never be allowed to experience sadness or frustration.

Such an indulged child is bound to be spoiled, of course, but also often feels a great deal of pressure to be perfect. When parents watch every move a child makes with eagle eyes, she can easily come to feel that any mistake or shortcoming is the end of the world. This makes for very accomplished, sometimes precocious children, but also for a high degree of perfectionism. When only children succeed in meeting parental expectations they are richly rewarded with praise. An unintended consequence, however, is the fear that one day they might fail, and lose all. In a sense, they become addicted to praise and don't develop the inner resilience naturally ingrained in children who have to battle for family position. Not all only children are "overly special," of course. Many parents balance indulgence with limits, and make a conscious effort to keep the pressure down,
Even I m a only child of my parents...n its true Only child is a Lonely Child.....

Mom & Daughter

Mothers truly love their daughters. And daughters truly love their mothers.History and the research provided from years of therapy couches have proven that in many cases, mothers are much more critical of their daughters than their sons, at least openly and visibly and certainly audibly. This is most obvious in households with only two children; one boy and one girl. Of course, mothers can be critical of anyone, it is part of their job. Then, Why is the mother daughter relationship so incredibly and unreasonably strained? May be because, the relationship between the mother and husband and the father and daughter, which of course is the same person. Some people feel the battle for his attention between the two female counterparts causes tension early on. There is scientific evidence that explains that the child of the opposite gender tends to bond more closely with the parent of the opposite gender. Hence the terms “Mama’s boy” and “Daddy’s little girl.”

The greatest gift that either woman can give to the mother daughter relationship is honesty. Self honesty, and honest self evaluation, can go a long way in the healing process. If you are a daughter who intentionally tells those little white lies about your life to make your mother’s blood boil under her skin (of course you wouldn’t do something like that) then evaluate it, admit at least to yourself, and change it. If you’re a mother who constantly nags at her daughter to find the right man—or woman—(of course this isn’t you) then try admitting it at least to yourself, change it, and celebrate her accomplishments the next time you speak with her. These are the most basic, most elemental steps toward opening the door to a much better relationship with the most important persons in your lives.

INDIAN IN A BOX

Irrespective of the way the name sounds, the bottom line is - INDIAN IN A BOX serves yummy Indo - Chinese food in an unconventional style - 'in a BOX'. The "plate-less" restaurant opened its first outlet at off Senapati Bapat road, Pune in mid 2008. Since then it is a source of joy and great hospitality, not just for the foodie but for the non foodies as well, because they make food with love. They take your Taste buds far off imagination.

The quality of food & style of serving drove the D2I editorial team to cover inside story of INDIAN IN A BOX. The following information is based on the conversation between Mr. Ashish Sondhi, C.E.O of INDIAN IN A BOX and Miss. Arundhati Bhattacharjee, D2I Correspondent, Qonta Software Pvt. Ltd. Pune.

Talking about Food

INDIAN IN A BOX: A quick service, 'plate-less' restaurant; aiming for dining experience and a value for money. All human beings are in search of LOVE and we too strongly believe in LOVE. All that is cooked in INDIAN IN A BOX have one ingredient in common and that is LOVE. We fry LOVE, stream LOVE, Marinate LOVE, Stir LOVE and most importantly serve with LOVE. Cooked in clarified butter the piping hot healthy Indo-Chinese food delivered at your door step, when the vapours are still brewing at no extra cost sounds YUMMMMYY and tempting too. And the best part is that the VALUE MEAL starts from Rs 29.00/- only. Our value meal starts at Rs. 29 only What's in a Name

INDIAN IN A BOX-A Trademark and a free standing company started by Mr. ASHISH SONDHI, the name come into his mind, way back in 2001 while he was in New Delhi for a very short trip. He had gone to a friend's place for lunch. A small conversation with his friend's father led to the humble beginning of this brand.

Uncle would you like to have pizza ?

My son, its nothing but stale bread

This answer was thought provoking for Mr. Sondhi. He thought we Indians are so creative, intelligent; but still we are in a BOX. But this box is magical one. We Indians are not willing to take challenges or create opportunity to work for ourselves. Despite of all the creativity we possess, we don't explore ourselves to the level that our peers do in other countries.

So; Mr. Sondhi took the initiative to build INDIAN IN A BOX. For Mr. Sondhi Food is second love; first is LIFE itself. After numerous sessions of brainstorming, research and analysis; he found Pune to be the most suitable place for this food outlet. He established this business with his own efforts, with no funds taken from any Institute or Bank. Serve Food in a box Indian in a box a 'plate-less' food joint While travelling from Europe to Seoul, in airplane Mr Sondhi was watching a Hollywood movie, where the characters in the movie were having food in a box, this idea attracted him a lot, and he decided on serving food in a box only. He tried various types of boxes and after a long stint of disappointments he finalised on an eco friendly box suitable for serving food. And that's how the restaurant became a 'plate-less' food joint.

Dream Destination / Expansion Plan

Most of the Indian food chains are limited geographically to their state or place of origin only. For example the chain of Nirula's in the north, Kamat in the South, jumbo King in the west and the list continues.

Though the Indian food chains have a world class appeal in terms of the quality of food and services they do not have a Pan-India presence. Whereas, brands like McDonald, Pizza hut, KFC have their joints spread around in all Indian towns. On similar grounds, Mr. Sondhi dreams of creating a niche for INDIAN IN A BOX accross India. Hence he is open for both franchisee model, as well as own expansion with help of VC / PE funding. Customer is QUEEN

"CUSTOMER IS QUEEN" sounds catchy & interesting; indeed it is. Well we all have heard that CUSTOMER IS KING, but here we find "CUSTOMER IS QUEEN". This Tag line itself reflects, Mr. Sondhi's Love & Respect towards women. According to him "SHE is most powerful word, accept it". And for him customer is most powerful segment of any food chain or business. So here they have 'Customer is Queen'.

Behind every successful man, there is a woman. Then who is the women behind Mr. Sondhi's success? The answer is in the name itself, [I] INDIAN IN A BOX

In Marathi language "I" or "Aai" Stands for mother. His mother has inspired him a lot; she is the backbone in his life.

About Mr. Ashish Sondhi (CEO of the Company)

ASHISH SONDHI- Young, dynamic entrepreneur born in Punjab & bought up in London, UK. Since the age of 16years, he is been working in hospitality sector which has always attracted him. He is a True Indian by heart. At a very young age, he had established his own business. His hobbies are- cooking, writing, & spending time with his family. He says that, the credit of his success goes to his mother- "Mum's are the most important ingredients of our lives".
